I would echo so much of what Lori said in the episode. Her tough love, straightforward approach is often what is needed when looking at our finances. The one thing I think that is hard for me to square sometimes, especially when working with everyday people, is the fixability of things. It’s not always just a math problem. It takes time, connections, and luck to get finances in order for many people. One can only move the numbers around so much. There is only so much you can cut expenses. Even with big lifestyle shifts, it costs money to live a dignified life. Sometimes, the only real answer (on an individual level) is to make more money. That’s easier said than done. I agree that we need to understand our money, make a plan, and find creative solutions, but somewhere in there, I think we also have to acknowledge that this is hard. Figuring out how to make enough and save enough (as Lori said, we aren’t saving enough for retirement) while still covering everyday expenses is HARD. And it’s not about to get easier.
